South Africa: Num Condemns AMCU Leader 'S Irresponsible Statements

press release

The National Union of Mineworkers has noted the statements made by AMCU President Joseph Mathunjwa yesterday in which he says six of his members were assaulted by the NUM strikers at Sibanye Gold in the Free State yesterday. The NUM has investigated the matter and found that no such incident did take place during the very peaceful industrial action conducted by the peaceful union, NUM in the gold sector. The police have no record of such injured people and he has failed dismally to point such people to the media. He has failed to tell where such injured people have been hospitalized.

The NUM is disappointed that the President of a union can make such spurious claims. The NUM has correctly categorized his claims as mere jealously and an intention to provoke violence under the guise of retaliation. The NUM is satisfied that all stakeholders which includes itself, the police and Sibanye Gold have conducted investigations which found that such claims were spurious and false.
