A cargo train heading to Kisumu from Mombasa derailed in Naivasha, affecting railway services along the route. The train spilled part of its cargo near Chechnia area between Naivasha and Mai Mahiu during the midday incident.
No one was injured during the incident as police and railway officers moved in to secure the scene. The accident affected rail transport as part of the railway line was uprooted and some wagons crushed by their side.
According to a resident, James Kimani, there was a loud screech before the train engine derailed. "We were in the farm when we heard the loud noise and dust," he said. Naivasha police boss Charles Kortok said all the goods are in safe custody.
