THE Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) is impressed by the practices undertaken by Chinese Construction firms of testing its building materials with the bureau before construction of various construction projects kick off.
TBS head of Building and Construction, Engineer Johannes Maganga told this newspaper over the week end that the Chinese firms' practices were worth to be emulated by other construction companies engaged in the construction projects.
Engineer Maganga said the high level of awareness on the matter of ensuring needed buildings standards was a result of awareness created by his bureau on the obligation they have to test their materials for standardization.
There has been an increasing number of Chinese Companies undertaking various construction projects in the country cooperating very well with TBS in ensuring that the materials being used are tested to verify its standards," he asserted.
The engineer was allaying fears raised by some people who were worried if the Chinese firms building materials meet the needed standards.
"We certify the standards of the construction materials on a daily basis and so far we receive between two to three samples, which is a good sign that the engineers are aware that they are obliged to certify their standards with TBS before construction," he said.
Without mentioning the names, Mr Maganga said all the big Chinese construction companies in the country have their materials certified with the TBS standards thus calling others to observe the local standards than the British Standards which many engineers were used to.
He said they have a special awareness raising campaign to educate the engineers countrywide on the need to test their construction materials before the projects take off for accountability and professionalism.
