THE Dar es Salaam bourse was almost dormant last week, with its weekly turnover declining by over 80 per cent to 906m/-, from 4.65bn/- registered in the previous week.
The shares transacted dwindled as well to 1,277,500, from 4,648,476 of the week before. The weekly market commentary from the Tanzania Securities Limited (TSL) shows that foreign investors' participation went down to 23.63 per cent of the week's total turnover.
However, the indices headed north for both the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange All Share Index (DSEI) and the Tanzania Share Index (TSI).
The DSEI closed 0.33 per cent higher at 1,616.86 points while the TSI ended the week at 1,985.36 points, a 1.16 per cent up. The Banking segment Index strengthened to 1,995.13 points, 2.7 per cent up, thanks to 2.2 per cent gains on NMB counter to 1,860/- from 1,820/- per share.
The Industrial and Allied Index ended the week at 2,168.61 points, supported by TBL counter that gained 0.54 per cent to close at 3,720/-.
The banking segment moved a significant volume of shares and turnover during the week accounting for 89 per cent of the total volume traded and 58 per cent of the market value. Foreign investors contributed 61.54 per cent of CRDB's total turnover.
The counter traded 487,483 shares at a price of 265/- and 270/- per share while NMB counter transacted 49,209 shares at 1,840/- and 1,860/- each.
The Industrial and Allied segment was less liquid in the period under review compared to the previous week. The segment accounted for 11 per cent of the total market's activity and 42 per cent of the total turnover.
Twiga was the most active counter among the Industrial and Allied sector, moving 102,479 shares at 2,700/- per share.
TBL followed with 17,225 shares being transacted at between 3,700/- and 3,720/- per share. Simba closed the week at 2,380/- per share, moving 13,100 shares.
A total of 4,835 shares of Swissport changed hands at 2,280/- while TOL moved 2,000 shares at 305/-. TCC counter moved 69 shares at 6,860/-. TATEPA and Precision counters remained dormant for the whole of the week.
