TWO people drowned while two others have gone missing after their boat was hit by strong sea waves and sank in Mbegani area, Bagamoyo District, in Coastal Region, on Tuesday evening.
Coastal Regional Police Commander (RPC), Ulrich Matei, said that the accident occurred at around 7pm when the boat was heading to Las Lagon island from Mbegani. He said the vessel, christened Gogo Water Boat, was carrying six people, two of whom drowned and another two were rescued.
Two of them were still missing. The RPC named the deceased as Elikulano Malile (39), a security guard and Mwanahawa Mtungi (30), a farmer.
Those who were rescued are Levina Mdemu (29) and Daudi Kiando (32)," he said. He identified those still missing as Robert Kambo (34) and Elisando Malile, a four-month-old child and the daughter of Mwanahawa Mtungi.
RPC Matei said preliminary investigation showed that the boat sunk due strong waves, adding that the police had mounted a search for those still missing.
Meanwhile, the body of a newborn female baby was found on Tuesday in Bagamoyo-Tukuyu area, Rungwe District, in Mbeya Region.
Mbeya Regional Police Commander(RPC), Diwani Athumani, said the body was found in the evening covered with a piece of cloth and hidden under a stone.
The RPC said the body was abandoned by an unknown person whom the police were now searching for. "The body is preserved at Makandana Regional Hospital and no one has been arrested in connection with the incident," he said.
