County Ward Representatives held a meeting in Nairobi on Saturday, during which they resolved that all assemblies would approve an amendment Motion on Thursday and suspend operations until their new pay structure is released.
County Assembly Speakers' forum Chairman Abdi Nur said the County Reps want their allowances harmonised with those of other State officers as gazzeted by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
"The Assemblies have again resolved unanimously that they will want to adjourn the sitting indefinitely until the commission is able to sort out the issues and is able to communicate effectively to the Assemblies whether they have been able to resolve the remunerations of the MCAs and if so by how much," he said.
Nur accused the Commission of reneging on its word after the two groups met in July, where the SRC reportedly proposed to conduct an evaluation of the County Reps mandate and release a revised salary and allowances structure.
Nur said the Ward representatives are pushing for mileage and plenary sitting allowances like those enjoyed by parliamentarians and members of constitutional commissions.
However, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) is still conducting the job evaluation, and Commissioner Jason Namasake said they would release a new structure in the next one month.
Speaking in Ol Kalou when they met members of the Nyandarua County Public Service Board Namasake observed that this is aimed at providing the commission with better understanding of the devolution process, opportunities and challenges being focused.
His counterpart Sarah Kinyua echoed the sentiments adding that the Commission has identified several challenges facing most counties among them the workforce they inherited from the defunct local authorities whose pay structures were completely different from the structures found in the civil service.
Kinyua added that there was duplication of roles making it difficult to establish the number of people required performing certain duties and hence the re-evaluation will come in handy to help in solving the matter.
