Airtel Rwanda in partnership with Ferwafa and the Ministry of Sports and Culture last week Friday handed over the national flag to team Lionceaux of Rubavu who emerged victorious in the African Raising Stars competition. The team was later on Saturday afternoon seen off at Kigali International Airport for Lagos, Nigeria where they will compete against teams from all English-speaking African countries where Airtel has operations.
Four months ago, Arsenal FC's Lauren Mayer launched the prestigious Airtel Rising Stars football tournament which is aimed at offering Rwanda's young footballers the opportunity to play, compete and showcase their talents to scouts throughout Africa.
There were regional eliminations countrywide from 157 to 64 teams based on performance and Under-16 Airtel Rising Stars tournament requirements. The national tournament then started on June 1 across the 4 zones and Lionceaux of Rubavu emerged national winners.
All players who took part in the African Raising Stars Competition were under the age of 16.
The Rwandan delegation was composed of 16 players, one coach who is also the chaperon for the team and one Airtel Rwanda representative.
