Ambassador Kongit Sinegiorgis, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the AU and UNECA and Chairperson of the Permanent Representatives Committee made a presentation on the "50th Anniversary of the OAU/AU: Origins, Achievements, Limitations and Future Role" at the Goethe Institute on Friday (September 13).
The event was organized by the Institute for Peace and Security Studies. As a veteran diplomat, with long experience of the continental body, Ambassador Kongit sketched the OAU's major achievements and challenges since its establishment in 1963. She described the OAU's successes in liberating the continent from Colonialism and Apartheid and its achievements in acting as a continental platform for global interaction. She noted the challenges it faced in the form of inter- and intra-state conflict on the continent, bad governance and corruption, and a heavy debt burden.
