Mozambique: Second Kidnap Trial Begins

Maputo — A second trial of alleged kidnappers began in Maputo on Tuesday, and the first of the accused to testify, Bendene Chissano (known as “the Angolan”), claimed that he had been tortured by the police to confess to all the crimes of which he is accused.

The trial arises from the wave of kidnappings of businessmen of Asian origin from late 2011 onwards. Four men accused of the kidnapping of Ibrahim Gani, owner of the INCOPAL food processing factory, have already been tried in the neighbouring city of Matola. The Matola court will deliver its verdict and sentence on 30 October.
