Kenya: The Pastoral, Political and Pious

As galleries in Kenya seem to rise and fall with the seasons, One Off Gallery in Nairobi's Rosslyn Lone Tree neighbourhood appears to be one of the few to thrive despite a capricious art climate. For two decades now, owner Carol Lees has been curating exhibitions to showcase exciting works by some of the best contemporary artists in the region.

This month at One Off, an impressive cross-section of the artists Lees represents are showcased in her gallery. The current exhibition includes an interesting jacaranda wood sculpture 'Elephant Woman' by Chelenge van Rampelberg. From the looks for the braids on the warped figurine, it could be a self-portrait, a distorted interpretation.
