Kenya: Embryo Transfer Technology Set to Boost Fortunes of Dairy Farmers

According to Dr Maurice Cherogony, the CEO of the Livestock Genetics Society of Kenya, embryo transfer - also known as Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer - is a process where a donor animal is subjected to hormonal treatment (super ovulation) to induce release of many eggs, which are then served and embryos removed through a flushing technique.

The embryos so collected are then transferred to a synchronised recipient to carry the embryos to term. "It is worth mentioning that, in many cases, the donors and recipients are hormonally induced in such a way that both come on heat at the same time (synchronisation). The reason for this is that flushing is done even after donor service and the recipient uterus should be of the same age to successfully hold the embryo. This process is the also called the Conventional Embryo Transfer," he says.
