A 21-year-old Nigerian, Obabiyi Ajibola, beat 19 other contestants to emerge Muslimah Queen 2013.
The exclusive beauty pageant for Muslim women took place on Wednesday, September 18 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Ajibola, a University of Lagos student, won $2,200 (N356,000) and trips to Mecca and India.
The contestants, who wore headscarves and were covered from head to toe, were judged on their looks, recitation of Quranic verses and their views on Islam in the modern world.
According to the organisers, the pageant is aimed at creating awareness within the Muslim female community that there is a better form of beauty than the one being portrayed by the better known Miss World pageant.
The beauty contest was started three years ago by Eka Shanti, a former TV news anchor who lost her job after refusing to remove her headscarf. She bills the contest as "Islam's answer to Miss World".
