Gambia: Legends - - Great Gambian Wrestlers

Gambian wrestling is and has always been characterised by 'Greco-Roman' wrestling. This art of wrestling is over 1000 years old. The Sudanese, the Nubians, the Carthageans, the Roman and Greeks, all wrestle the Greco -Roman style which was made popular by the Roman Emperors.

Gambian wrestling started to get organised in the early 1950s in Banjul at the Secretariat Office Ground now known as the Quadrangle (Ministry of Culture & Tourism, Ministry of Health Buildings). The venue was later moved to the Box Bar Staduim now King Fahad Mosque grounds before it was finally located to the famous Dodou Mbaye Yard (Now New Primet Junction & Mosque Road). These were not the only venues, there were also another venues called the Polular Arena Omar Gaye Nyang in Serekunda, the Arena B.O. Semega Janneh in Dippa Kunda. The Arenas were mostly salty grounds and sand with barbedwire rings for wrestlers. The fences were iron corrugate and the entrances were formed like arches with two tree trunks and a shield to prevent passers-by to see what was going on inside. The tickets sellers were stationed at the far corner of the stadium entrance.
