Deputy President William Ruto has condemned the attack on shoppers and staff at the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi's Westlands area in which gunmen numbering between five and 10 assailed the premise with sophisticated weapons indiscriminately firing into the crowds.
Ruto while describing the act as "cowardly and wicked" said that the government stands with those affected during the moment of grief and sorrow. "I take this opportunity to commiserate with families of the bereaved & injured in the Westgate Mall," Ruto said.
Meanwhile the Nakumatt holdings have announced the closure of several branches in the city as a precautionary measure. "As a precautionary point Village, Karen, Galleria, Lifestyle and Junction branches closed following the closure of the respective malls by the management.," the retail firm posted on its Facebook and Twitter social media platforms.
Rescue operations are still ongoing with Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo leading a contingent of officers from various security agencies including the Kenya Defence forces and the General Service Unit.
