Angola: Rafael Marques De Morais Detained in Luanda

Rapid Intervention Police officers arrested journalist and human rights defender Rafael Marques de Morais in Luanda today. According to Osvaldo Silva, an eye witness at the scene, Mr. Marques de Morais was arrested along with six of the nine protesters who had been released today, along with journalists Alexandre Solombe and Coke Mukuta, a correspondent for Voice of America.

The journalists were interviewing the released protesters near the Police Court, around Largo Serpa Pinto in Luanda, when they were surrounded by elements of the Rapid Intervention Police and then taken in a police van to an unknown location. Osvaldo Silva, a member of the opposition party Bloco Democrático, managed to escape arrest.

Some 23 protesters had been arrested following an attempted government demonstration on Thursday, September 19.
