PROPERTY worth more than Sh3 million was destroyed on Wednesday evening when an inferno razed Wasini Mpunguti Lodge in Msambweni district. The 5pm fire is said to have destroyed 10 grass-thatched hotel rooms.
The hotel has 40 rooms and can accommodate up to 70 guests. Hotel owner Abdul Masoud said the fire is a big blow to them. He told the Star on the phone that the dining and kitchen rooms were among the 10 rooms.
"Four tourists had booked the hotel from Tuesday and were supposed to leave on Thursday. They have lost all their belongings," Masoud said. He said eight other tourists who had booked for yesterday had to cancel after the incident.
Abdul said the cause of the fire is yet to be established. But Shimoni Beach Management Unit chair Ahmed Abubakar said a neighbour was burning rubbish next to the hotel and strong winds blew the fire.
"Other houses belonging to locals near the hotel also caught fire and three of them were burnt down," he said. Marine police in collaboration with locals later managed to put out the fire.
Msambweni AP boss Wilson Gichuhi said the four tourists are Germans and lost their travel documents to the fire. He said the four were not in their rooms when the fire broke out.
