David Hoffman, a renowned American tourism blogger and documentary filmmaker, has vowed to promote Rwanda's tourism industry at the global level.
While completing his one-week tour of Rwanda last Tuesday, Hoffman said he plans to write e-books and make videos about the country's tourism sector, which he will post on his blog, davidsbeenhere.com.
He said with the assistance from his wife Anna Hoffman, the pair will write 52 different guide e-books for Kindle, the iPad and online PDF notes and release monthly videos about Rwanda for the next few months.
"Many people don't know much about what Rwanda offers in terms of tourism. Many only think about the gorillas or the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and that's why we want to give people a broad view about Rwanda, as far as its tourism sector is concerned," said Hoffman.
Based in Florida, the couple that was in the country for a week said that they were impressed by the tourist attractions they visited in Rwanda pledging to do his best to promote the Rwanda tourism sector around the world through their blog and on other Internet sites. Their work will include the national parks, traditional Rwandan culture and language, and the consistent development of the country.
Hoffman said he and his wife worked with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) to get footage of all parks and tourism sites around the country, saying that he is optimistic that this will market the country when it is uploaded on the blog and other several Internet sites.
"Nyungwe Forest Reserve Nziza project won the British Guild of Travel Writers' Globe Award last year and it's through inviting writers like Hoffman that we promote Rwanda among the global travel industry," said Rica Rwigamba, the head of the tourism depart at RDB.
The blogger's trip was part of an initiative of press trips that Rwanda and partners like Qatar Airlines and RwandAir sponsor writers to market the country's tourism sector.
Rwigamba pointed out that the large number of Hoffman followers on his blog and Twitter account (over 14,000 followers, including US President Barack Obama) and his prolific use of social media during the whole time he and his wife were travelling through Rwanda was indeed great exposure for the country's tourism industry.
Rwanda earned $142.5 million in tourism revenues in the first semester of this year, compared to $128.4 million in the same period last year. The country received 664,729 visitors, up from 583,096 during the same period last year.
Rwanda mainly promotes tourism through global tourism expos.
