The Gambia has registered tremendous achievements in national development ranging from agriculture, to health, education, tourism and culture, just to mention a few. The back-to-the-land initiative, the proliferation of hospitals and schools across the country, the ongoing widening of our investment market and the boosting of our tourism sector among others coupled with massive infrastructural development are pointers that The Gambia has witnessed huge investment in development.
It also shows that the government has committed itself to social justice, and is exhausting all efforts to arrest the phenomena of poverty and underdevelopment, protect our sovereignty and ensure that The Gambia becomes a bastion for the advancement of humanity.
In fact, all the assessment reports conducted both within and independently, by others on The Gambia's status on achieving the MDGs suggest that despite the many challenges that confront us, significant progress has been achieved in virtually all sectors of the Gambia economy including the critical sectors of education and health. Since the advent of the Second Republic, we have been able to implement many projects that have brought beneficial social and economic transformation to the people of this country. Today the country can look back with pride that its development experience has become a success story and an example for other nations to emulate.
The citizens therefore bear the responsibility of complementing the government's magnanimous endeavour. As the deadlines for the MDGs draw closer by the day, it is urgent that all Gambians at home and abroad become more determined in their resolve to mobilise a more committed, stronger, and unified populace that would ensure that the development goals and targets are achieved in record time.
The leadership of the country has proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the promotion and enshrinement of the progress, peace and prosperity of this country is his mission. It is therefore a moral obligation on us all as Gambians to complement the efforts of the government to not only realise the objectives of the MDGs, but also guarantee the sustainability of our collective achievements. This is what the president envisages and it is the lesson of nation building.
