Businessmen under the auspices of Association of Traders in Zamfara State have concluded arrangements to marry off 100 widows and divorcees in a bid to reduce the number of unmarried women in the state.
Chairman of the association of unmarried women in the state Alhaji Ibrahim Sani Gusau disclosed this to newsmen.
Last week, about 8,000 unmarried women comprising of divorcees, widows and young ladies stormed the state Hizba office appealing to the state government to organize Kano-style mass wedding for them.
Sani said they would collaborate with the Hizba Commission, Ministry of Religious Affairs and Zakkat Board to realise the said objective. He added that the programme would commence immediately after the Hajj exercise. "We will meet all the stakeholders and discuss the possible ways of succeeding in the programme. We are committed to this course because we are stakeholders. We are all family men; we have children and wives and they could become widows at any time."
He said ignoring the plight of widows and divorcees could lead to social crisis. He attributed the rampant cases of marital failure to high cost of engagements, impatience among couples and economic hardship.
