Kenya: Teen Jets Off to Chicago Marathon for Blood Charity

Erica Njeri Gachoka jets off to the US tomorrow ahead of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon 2013. Erica has been sponsored by BloodLink Foundation to raise funds for the mobile blood units that will help in recruitment and mobilisation of blood donors to ensure sufficient safe blood for needy Kenyans.

BloodLink Foundation executive director Joseph Wang'endo said the Foundation, which is sponsoring Erica for the marathon, has launched a campaign to raise Sh4.3million ($50,000) to purchase the mobile blood donation unit. Every 10 minutes, three Kenyans need blood, yet only 60 per cent of our blood needs are being met. The solution was to get mobile blood units which are advantageous because of safety, privacy and mobility.
