The Nigerian fashion world has its own share of fashion events that are held every year to showcase the budding talents in the industry. KEHINDE AJOBIEWE writes on some of these events

Lagos Fashion and Design Week

The GTBank-sponsored Lagos Fashion and Design Week is a fashion event that aims to drive the Nigerian fashion industry and lift its profile by bringing together buyers, consumers and the media to view the current collections of designers in the fashion capital of Lagos. Beyond its glitz and glamour, the fashion runway show has succeeded in repositioning fashion as a useful tool for commerce and creativity in Nigeria.

The event often captures exhibition marketplace where fashion products, textiles and accessories are displayed, workshops and master classes, young designer of the year award by MTN and British Council, among others.

Music Meets Runway

The main idea behind Music Meets Runway is to provide a platform for talented designers, especially those who normally are excluded from the highly competitive world of fashion to showcase their unique artworks, while talented music artistes perform on stage.

It is an annual fashion and music show event, which features fashions by the new era of fashion being presented by live performances by popular music acts, including international artistes.

ARISE Magazine Fashion Week

ARISE fashion week is a fashion event initiated by the publisher of Africa's first and foremost international style magazine, ARISE.

After three successful seasons of ARISE African Fashion Collective at NYFW, plus sponsorship of Africa Fashion Week 2009 in Johannesburg, ARISE founder Nduka Obaigbena felt it was time ARISE launched its own pan-African event.

The fashion event came into being as part of the commitment of Arise Magazine to highlight African talents. The maiden edition of the show, which was held in Lagos, brought together 50 designers from Africa and the Diaspora. It features shows, awards, seminars as well as concerts.

Runway Abuja

Runway Abuja is an event that was berthed in 2010 to create a platform for fashion brands and businesses to showcase their products to wider audiences and connect with new markets. We believe in good fashion and a great show. It is an event held in Abuja every year. Vodi, 1979, Gemini, Baldon, House of Silk, were some of the 10 designers that participated in the last edition.

Native and Vogue International Fashion Week

The Native and Vogue International Fashion Week is meant to serve as a platform for designers and aspiring designers to showcase the great wealth of local talents that abound in Nigeria.

The fashion event, which is held in Port Harcourt every year, is aimed at creating and developing the local fashion industry in a way that will benefit the community and positively influence the economy in the areas of education, culture, community service and tourism

The project is a three-day fashion week that brings together already established fashion designers from Nigeria and beyond who will showcase their wares and give short tutelage to aspiring designers.

It presents an avenue for the upcoming and aspiring designers to seize the opportunity of a career launch after undergoing a short tutelage under the already established designers.
