Dr. Mulatu Teshome has been elected President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Following the opening of the new Parliament, a joint session of the House of Representatives and House of Federation elected Ambassador Dr. Mulatu Teshome as the President of Ethiopia.
Dr. Mulatu was previously serving as the country's Ambassador to Turkey. Former President Girma Woldegiorgis handed over power to his successor today (October 7). President Girma in a farewell address noted that during his two terms in office as president Ethiopia had made great strides in nation-building, ensuring equitable development and demonstrating an exceptional fast growing economy and great strides in democracy.
The departing president said a nation had been built in which religious and ethnic diversity now flourished in a democratic way. After taking the oath of office, President Mulatu Teshome pledged to fulfill all the responsibilities bestowed on him by the choice of the two Houses of Parliament.
