Tanzania: Railway System Revamp an Urgent Priority

THE strike by transporters that paralysed the country's transport services last week has affirmed that the revival and improvement of the railway system is an urgent priority that can hardly afford the system bureaucracy.

For excessive reliance on roads for haulage of cargo and passengers is not only destructive to our costly roads (it now costs between 800m/- and 1.2bn/- to construct one kilometre of tarmac road!) but also socially and economically risky.
