Somalia: African Union Backs Peace and Security Council Call for More AMISON Troops

Over the weekend, the African Union which held its Extraordinary Heads of State and Government Summit on Saturday, and its Council of Ministers' meeting on Friday, endorsed a call by the AU's Peace and Security Council to increase the size of AMISOM.

The Peace and Security Council has called for AMISOM's forces to be increased by about a third to reinforce the campaign against Al-Shabaab. It suggested that a further 6,235 soldiers and police should be added to the AMISOM peacekeeping for a limited period of 18 to 24 months. This would take its total strength to 23,966 uniformed personnel. This follows comments from Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces, General Katumba Wamala, who said last month that AMISOM needed more troops. Uganda provides the largest contingent of AMISOM forces.
