Agriculture grew by 3.8 per cent last year to Sh344.6 billion up from Sh331.8 billion in 2011 when the sector grew by1.9 per cent, Agriculture Secretary Felix Koskei has said.
He said the increase in production was realised in tea, maize, sugar cane, rice, wheat and horticulture. Koskei said maize production increased by 12 per cent to 41.8 million bags last year up from 37.5 million bags the previous year.
The country's average national annual maize requirement stands at 44 million bags. Speaking in Bungoma during the World Food Day celebrations, Koskei said tea and horticultural produce were the key export crops which earned the country Sh112 billion and Sh87 billion respectively in 2012.
