The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection says the proposed legislation for debt contraction by parliament is welcome.
JCTR Programmes Manager Geoffrey Chongo said the law would curb the reckless borrowing by the government.
Chongo said the move would also help to protect Zambia from sliding back into a debt trap as happened during the Highly Indebted Poor Countries Initiative era.
He said government would think twice about borrowing and ensure that they had a good reason for going that route.
Chongo said JCTR was happy that after years of lobbying successive governments over the matter there was progress as the matter had been taken to parliament.
Opposition Movement for Multi Party Democracy Chipangali Member of Parliament Vincent Mwale has moved a motion that aims at legislating debt contraction through parliament.
