The Jubilee coalition is now considering blocking all government officials from flying in first class during local and international flights.
Only President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, National Assembly Speaker Justine Muturi and Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro will be permitted to fly first class.
To be barred from using first class includes all other state and public officers including the governors of the 47 counties, the cabinet secretaries and principal secretaries.
Also to be blocked from flying first class will be officers of constitutional commissions, heads of state corporations and government departments.
A motion sponsored by the Jubilee coalition will be introduced in the National Assembly tomorrow seeking House approval of the new measures.
The motion will be introduced through committee on Budget and Appropriations and it will be read by Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau.
Jubilee coalition has said the new measures have been necessitated by government's financial constraints.
MPs want the implementation of the new cost cutting measure to start immediately.
"This decision takes effect immediately and all respective Accounting Officers take necessary action to implement, without exception," reads in part the motion.
If the motion is passed and implemented, all government officials will be flying economy class during their official trips locally.
It is only while travelling on international flights that they will be allowed to use business class "unless they meet their own costs for an upgrade."
The MPs have said the new structure of governance that incorporated devolution has seen funds channeled to the counties hence the need for the national government to consider cost cutting measures.
The MPs have noted that it is the national government that has to cater for the expenses of State officers while on official duties, including transport and other facilitation within and outside the country.
