TWO MPs have called upon the government to declare the Cancer disease as a national disaster.
Mathira MP Peter Weru and Nyeri county MP Priscilla Nyokabi said they will table a motion in Parliament to ensure that the disease is declared a national disaster since it has killed many people in the country.
Speaking during a free medical clinics at Karatina and at DEB Primary School in Mathira on Saturday, and the two MPs said the disease is killing many Kenyans and there is need to find new ways to curb it.
They added that there is need for thorough regular screening and creating awareness to all Kenyans.
"We need the government to increase funding to fight non -communicable diseases such as this. Let all the Kenyans test early enough so that they can be able to control it," said Nyokabi.
They said there is need to carry regular free medical camps in every constituency so that Kenyans could have a chance to be examined.
The medical camp was organized by a local non- governmental organization named Mathira Gwitu.
Nyeri county executive for Health Charles Githinji said the county has identified a development plan where non- communicable diseases such as diabetes and cancer will be given priorities.
"We shall have a regular mass screen in Nyeri County. A - state -of -the- art unit will also be established at Nyeri Provincial General Hospital next month. A kidney centre will also be started in Nyeri," Said Githinji.
He also urged the national government to allocate more funds on the health sector.
