Kenya: African Union Formally Requests Suspension of Kenyatta, Ruto ICC Trials

The African Union (AU) formally asked the United Nations Security Council Tuesday (October 22nd) to defer for one year the International Criminal Court (ICC) crimes against humanity trials of Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto.

The trials "may pose a threat to the ongoing efforts in the promotion of peace, national healing and reconciliation as well as the rule of law and stability in Kenya and the region," the AU said in a letter to UN Security Council President Agshin Mehdiyev, according to Kenya's Daily Nation.
