Africa: TB Report Underscores Need to Address R&D Gaps

Rockville — A report published today by the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that thousands of men, women and children with drug-resistant tuberculosis fail to get the critical drug treatment they need.

According to the WHO, progress toward diagnosis and treatment of multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB is “far off track,” and when coupled with the emergence of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB, constitutes “a public health crisis.” The failure to detect and treat those with drug-resistant TB is perpetuating a devastating cycle of transmission within families and communities, adding to the urgency to develop and deliver new, effective prevention measures.
