Malawi: Fighting Disasters With Seasonal Forecasts - Early Warning System

Blantyre — Flooding, drought and hailstorms are some of the disasters associated with the rainy season in Malawi. The three occurrences are some of the bad and lethal conditions that characterise some of the country's six disaster hot spots namely Karonga, Kasungu, Zomba, Mulanje, Chikhwawa and Nsanje.

Despite the country's Department of Climate Change and Metrological Services producing a seasonal forecast that forms part of an early warning system as they are aimed at helping people plan for the subsequent rainy season annually, people in the said areas and others that are slowly but surely graduating into tragedy hotspots due to climate change effects, still face life threats year in and out as they grapple with hazardous conditions that mostly take away valuable belongings including food.
