Taxi operators at Kinda Kindu in Kitui town have suspended operations to protest against alleged harassment by the Kitui county government.
The about 100 taxi operators yesterday drove in a convoy through the streets of Kitui town to Governor Julius Malombe's office where they demanded audience with him. They camped there until Deputy Governor Peninnah Malonza addressed them.
The operators' spokeman Zakayo Ngati said they were angered by the county officers attempts to eject them from the Kinda Kindu operation base despite paying the county government nearly Sh70,000 in taxes. He said they are being harassed because there is no alternative operation site.
Ngati said they want Malombe to intervene. He said they fear they will lose their livelihoods if evicted from Kinda Kindu. Malonza declined to address the media. She said she needs to consult with the relevant authorities before sharing any information.
