Blantyre — Female musicians in the country have vowed to fight for key positions in the Musicians Association of Malawi's (MAM) main committee when the grouping elects new office bearers at its Annual General Meeting later this year.
MAM Women's Desk president, Martha Mituka told the Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Saturday that the female musician's wing resolved at its quarterly meeting to field candidates in all main committee portfolios at the indaba to have a 50-50 representation between male and female musicians steering the grouping.
"We have seen our counterparts in other countries who are brushing shoulders with men in leading artist groupings and we would like to have the same here by competing in all the main positions that are there in the national committee.
"We will put in all our efforts as women's desk and leave no stone unturned in our quest to have some of us elected to those positions," said Mituka observing that the women's desk has many musicians capable of steering the national grouping.
She said by having positions in the main committee, female musician issues will also have a chance to drive the agenda for the grouping apart from having their problems addressed in time.
Mituka said so far their quest has been received with an overwhelming support from various stakeholders who have committed their support in cash and kind.
"We were amazed when we shared our intentions with other stakeholders who encouraged us apart from pledging to sponsor our aspirations," explained Mituka revealing that there is no woman musician currently occupying a seat in the national MAM committee.
She then asked other well-wishers to join those in support of the female musician's bid to reverse the current trend. Mituka however, said the women's desk was seeking an audience with the country's President, Dr. Joyce Banda to draw further inspiration for their quest.
Among others that have already expressed interest to support the campaign are Travel Option, Chilambula Lodge, Multi-choice Malawi, Luso and MBC television and Zodiak Broadcasting Station and Aqua Pure Water, according to Mituka.
