Jinja — An administration block for Buikwe district headquarters has been commissioned by the Minister of Local Government in order to boost service delivery.
The administration block was commissioned on Thursday at the district headquarters as part of the activities to mark the district's celebration for Uganda's Independence.
Before commissioning the block, Mwesige commended the Buikwe district leadership under its LC 5 chairperson Mathias Kigongo for being innovative and managing to put up such a structure using district funds.
"There are old districts which have stayed for over 20 years in Uganda but do not have such a magnificent building, but Buikwe which is three years old since it was curved from Mukono has something to show. I urge other new and old districts which do not have their own administration blocks to copy a leaf from Buikwe," Mwegise said.
In response to the challenges earlier on presented by Kigogo which included lack of zonal road equipment and demand by the public to tarmac Lugazi-Buikwe-Kiyindi-Buvuma road, Mwesige revealed that President Museveni directed his Ministry to buy more heavy equipment like compactors, excavators and graders where Buikwe is among the beneficiaries and will be able to grade more roads.
Mwesige further told residents that government revised the law on the road fund adding that money meant for paying licenses for vehicles at URA was stopped and instead it is taxed on the fuel used by vehicles.
"Taxes on fuel were raised and the money got goes direct to the road fund and is sent back to the districts to enable maintenance of road equipment," Mwesige said.
He revealed that all LC 3 chairpersons in the country will get motorcycles from government that they will use as transport facilities adding that government will also procure official vehicles for LC 5 chairpersons, CAOs and speakers of various districts by next year.
Mwesige promised that his Ministry will support Buikwe district in demanding for royalties and premium from Bujagali and Nalubale dams where electricity is generated.
He revealed that government finished construction of seven markets including that of Wandegeya and it is yet to plan for construction of more 21 markets which will include that of Lugazi town council in Buikwe.
However the district leadership requested President Yoweri Museveni to support Buikwe with the shs100m he gives to districts in support for construction of administration blocks.
