Kenya: Parents Told Not to Hide Disabled Kids

29 October 2013

Parents in Embu have been told not to hide their children with disabilities. Rotary Club of Embu President Johnston Nyaga told them such children have special needs and they should take them to school instead of locking them in the house.

He said he is aware that some parents hide the children out of shame and for fear of stigmatisation. Nyaga said locking up the children is not only detrimental to their development but is also a violation of human rights, which is punishable by law. "Children with disabilities have various talents which can be exploited," Nyaga said.
