Kenya: Why Being KDF Means Never Having to Say Sorry

After weeks of feeble denials the Kenyan military's top brass finally admitted this week that KDF officers really did engage in some looting at Westgate. Well, sort of. As confessions go Wednesday's presser at KDF's HQ in Hurligham had a more 'we're as shocked as you are' feel to it and was delivered without a smidgen of an apology or contrition.

The big reveal at the presser was that three KDF officers had been tied directly to the looting and were facing investigations and imprisonment. The Chief of Defense Forces General Julius Karangi this time also allowed that the commander in charge of the Westgate operation had shown poor judgment in allowing the officers to pick 'water' from the mall;
