Kenya: Kwale Told to Report Leprosy

2 November 2013

Msambweni subcounty in Kwale leads in leprosy cases, a specialist has said. Leprosy specialist at Msambweni District hospital Dr Samuel Githui said every year new cases of leprosy are recorded in the region. He said many residents do not seek medical attention because they believe leprosy is caused by witchcraft. "The community thinks the disease is caused by witchcraft," said Githui.

Speaking on the phone yesterday, he urged locals to report cases to hospitals as soon as they see symptoms. "If you start losing feeling of your body parts, it is advised that you see a doctor," said Githui. He said leprosy treatment in all government hospitals is free.
