Nigeria: El Tri Must Not Score First, Kalu Warns

7 November 2013

Former Abia State Governor, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, has some tips for the Golden Eaglets as they prepare to take on another first round foe in the final for the third time in Nigeria's FIFA Under-17 World Cup history. "Mexico must not get the opener," Kalu warned yesterday through his Special Assistant on Media, Emeka Obasi.

"That is key. Twice the Eaglets lost the cup to group opponents like USSR in 1987 and France in 2001. And in both games, the winners scored first. Eaglets played 1-1 with USSR at the edition in Canada '87 before the Eastern Europeans won 4-2 on penalties after another draw in the final. France who fell 1-2 to Nigeria in the Trinidad and Tobago first round, hammered Nigeria 3-0 in the grand-finale," Kalu recalled yesterday. Mexico is coming for a second chance after an earlier 6-1 disgrace against Nigeria in the Group F opening game.
