Kenya: Opposition to Controversial Kenya Media Bill Heats Up

Nairobi — Voices of discord continue to grow over a controversial media bill that Kenya's parliament passed late last month, as Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta reportedly sent the bill back to the legislative body for changes.

The 2013 Kenya Information and Communications (Amendment) Bill, which needs Kenyatta's signature to go into law, would impose heavy fines of up to 1 million shillings ($11,700) to individual journalists and 20 million shillings ($234,000) to media entities for violations of a new code of conduct. Journalists also could be penalised by being deregistered and having their bank accounts frozen.
