Mozambique: What Triggered the Violence At Opposition Rally in Beira?

Reporting from the ground on how a neighborhood in Beira, Mozambique's second largest city, governed by opposition party MDM, broke out in violence last night. A vehicle holding a Frelimo flag - escorted by a riot police vehicle - collided with a young man in the opposition rally. The crowd reacted and riot police used violent force.

On the outskirts of Beira, Mozambique's second largest city, on Saturday one neighborhood was transformed into a battleground. What was supposed to be the celebration of the end of incumbent mayor Daviz Simango's re-election campaign ended in a violent confrontation between riot police and supporters of Simango's party, MDM (Democratic Movement of Mozambique).
