Nigeria: Hospital Clerk Jailed 30 Months for N8 Million Fraud

4 December 2013

Lokoja — A Kogi High Court in Koton-Karfe yesterday sentenced a revenue clerk with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Lokoja, Modupe Adeyemi, to 30 months in prison for defrauding the centre of N8.3 million. Adeyemi was arraigned in January 2010 by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on a 29-count charge bordering on fraud and conferring corrupt advantage upon herself.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Alaba Omolaye-Ajileye said she had earlier made confessional statements on how she defrauded the institution and used the money to establish a pure water factory and acquire property. According to the judge, the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and convicted Adeyemi of 10 out of the 29 count-charges.
