President Adli Mansour declared public mourning for three days following the death of African leader Nelson Mandela, the Egyptian state television said on Friday.

Mandela passed away peacefully in his house in South Africa's Johannesburg on Thursday after a long struggle with lung disease.

In a statement it issued earlier today, Egypt's presidency mourned Mandela, who was the former President of South Africa and a great African leader.

"Leaders as great as Nelson Mandela, Gamal Abdel Nasser, and founding fathers of African struggle and resistance for freedom and independence will always remain a source of inspiration for peoples and a model for sacrifice," the presidency said.
