Kenya: Model Fresh Produce Markets On the Way

THE government plans to put up two pilot markets to promote export of diversified fresh agricultural and livestock products. Ministry of East African Community, Commerce and Tourism said the proposed large scale markets for perishable farm products will act as a model for private sector and the 47 counties to replicate elsewhere in the country.

They include a wholesale hub market to be located on a 50-acre parcel of land at Athi River's Export Processing Zone and a tier-one retail market at Maragua town in Murang'a.

The markets, to be built over the next four years, will adhere to global value chain quality standards including phytosanitary certifications in line with requirements by the World Trade Organization.
