South Africa: Mourners Flock to FNB Stadium

10 December 2013

Thousands of mourners are busy flowing into the FNB stadium to honour and pay their respects to former late President Nelson Mandela.

While the rain continues to fall down on FNB stadium, the spirit of mourners, who began entering the stadium when the gates opened at six, continues to be one of celebration as they sing freedom songs and dance. Rain is seen as being a blessing in several African cultures. Ordinary South Africans will take their place along at least 91 Heads of State expected from all over the world in an unprecedented and rare moment which will see as many leaders gathered in one place at the same time. The Memorial Service is expected to start at 11:00 with the singing of the South African National Anthem. Thereafter, there will be Welcome and Opening Remarks followed by various tributes.
