Nigeria: Ekiti Gets Law On Equal Opportunities

Ado-Ekiti — Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has signed the Equal Opportunities Bill into law, saying it however does not translate to equal responsibility between men and women, just as his wife, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, said she would press the National Assembly to inject the new law into the nation's constitution.

The new whose bill was initiated by Mrs Fayemi in collaboration with the state's Ministry of Women Affairs, Social Development and Gender Empowerment protects the economic and social rights of women, widows, the elderly, the retarded, physically challenged and other vulnerable members of the society. It also provides equal opportunities for all persons and prohibits all forms of gender-based discrimination and inequalities in public and private institutions.
