Nigeria: LCCI Decries Vitamin a Deficiency in 250 Million Children

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has expressed shock over an estimated 250 million preschool children who are deficient in vitamin A, and another 250,000 to 500,000 vitamin A-deficient children who become blind every year. LCCI lamented that half of these unfortunate children were dying within 12 months of losing their sight.

This was revealed at the annual health talk of the committee of women leaders of the Chamber in Lagos, with the theme 'Wellbeing and preventive medical remedies'. Mrs. Toyin Kassim, who represented the guest speaker of the annual health talk, Mr. Verkey Verghese, the Managing Director of Jawa Int'l Limited, said this deficiency occurs mostly when a mother is Vitamin A-deficient adding that Vitamins are organic components in food that are needed in very small amounts for growth and for maintaining good health.
