South Sudan Quashes Coup Attempt, Says President Kiir

South Sudan's President Salva Kiir says an attempted coup by soldiers loyal to his sacked former deputy Riek Machar has been put down. It comes after heavy gunfire overnight in the capital, Juba.

At a news conference, Mr Kiir said the government was in full control of the capital, and announced a night-time curfew for civilians. Several people are reported wounded and hundreds of people have sought refuge at the UN mission in Juba.
