Kenya: MP Says Coal Mining Proceed After All

MWINGI Central MP Joe Mutambu has said he has solved the stalemate that stalled the Kitui coal mining project. He said residents will start benefiting from the project within a year or two.

"It is now all systems go. Through my efforts coal mining in Blocks C and D of the Mui Coal Basins will soon start," he said. "This coal was discovered in the 1950s but it had not been possible to exploit it. I will do my best to ensure that you will enjoy the sweet fruit of the coal during my tenure," Mutambu said. He addressed public rallies at Kateiko and Karung'a trading centres within the coal belt on Saturday.

Mutambu was with county assembly representatives Stanislous Mulongo (Mui ward) and Patricia Kisio Kimanzi (Kivou ward). He said top government officials will this week visit the area to sign the Benefit Sharing Agreement with Fenxi Mining Industry Group.
