Kenya: Fisherman, Boat Operator Die in L Victoria

A fisherman and a boat operator died in in two separate incidents in Lake Victoria on Saturday. In the first incident, a form-one student of Usao Secondary School in Homa Bay county died after his boat overturned during a heavy storm. Erick Ouma Pamba,19, had gone on a fishing expedition when the incident happened.

Fishermen recovered his body on Sunday morning. Separately Jairus Otieno,18, a boat operator slipped from off from his boat and drowned in the lake. Fishermen said Otieno was trying to release the boat trapped by fishing nets.

He was ferrying passengers from Uyoma village to Homa Bay town. He was from Uyoma and was ferrying passengers to Homa Bay town. His body was retrieved from the lake on Sunday and taken to Uyoma for burial by the family members. Usao location chief William Kingi has appealed to fishermen to be careful when operating boats on the lake during during rainy seasons.
