Egypt: Pro-Mursi Alliance Delays Final Decision On Referendum

CAIRO, Dec 17 (Aswat Masriya) An Islamist alliance formed to support ousted President Mohamed Mursi has delayed its final decision regarding whether or not it intends to participate in the upcoming constitutional referendum, the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Newspaper said.

The spokesman of the "National Alliance to Support Legitimacy and Oppose the Coup" had told Al-Ahram Newspaper that the alliance will not participate in any votes under military rule.

A 50-member assembly, chaired by politician Amr Moussa, finished drafting a constitution two weeks ago and presented it to interim President Adli Mansour who called for a mid-January referendum on Saturday.

Egypt's army ousted the Brotherhood's Mursi from power in July in response to mass demonstrations across the country.

A roadmap announced upon Mursi's ouster included the amendment of a constitution written by an Islamist-led assembly last year and early parliamentary and presidential elections.
